Ledbury Guardian Newspaper 12-09-1914 The following additions have to be made to the Ledbury Roll of Honour. TERRITORIALS WRIGHT C., Bargains, Ledbury. Ledbury Guardian Newspaper 05 12 1914 MILITARY FUNERAL AT LITTLE MARCLE SOLDIER'S UNTIMELY DEATH The death took place on Friday last at the Hereford Territorial Hospital of Private Charles WRIGHT, of the Reserve Battalion, Herefordshire Regiment. The deceased, who was the son of Mrs. WRIGHT, Bargain's Lane, Little Marcle, was only 22 years of age, and joined the Territorials about 3 months ago. Three weeks ago deceased was taken ill with pneumonia and until November 23rd last had been an inmate of the Hereford Territorial Hospital. His condition, however, became so grave that he was moved to the General Hospital, where despite medical aid he passed away as stated above. Deceased was well known in the village of Little Marcle, and the news of his untimely death was received with deep regret. THE FUNERAL The funeral took place with military honours on Monday last, and the body was conveyed to Little Marcle on a transport wagon. A good muster of deceased's comrades at Hereford attended the funeral. The firing party was under Colour-Sergeant JAMES, and preceded the wagon containing the coffin to the churchyard. The Rev. HOLLAND (vicar) officiated, and the Battalion was represented by the Rev. A. N. COPE (chaplain), Lieutenant MUNN, and Sergeant Major HERBERT. The coffin, which was covered with the UNION JACK, upon which rested the deceased's hat and bayonet, was of polished elm with brass fittings, and the breastplate bore the following inscription:- Charles WRIGHT. Aged 22 years. Died November 27th, 1914. The first portion of the burial service was conducted in the church, where the hymn, "Brief life is here our portion" was sung. At the graveside three volleys were fired, and two buglers sounded the "Last Post." The mourners were:- Mrs. M. WRIGHT (mother), Mrs. E. TURNER (aunt), Miss Alice TURNER, Mr. Frank TURNER, Miss Dolly TURNER, Mr. Bert TURNER, Mr. Harold TURNER (cousins). There were also present:- Mrs. STURGE, Miss Gladys STURGE, Mr. C. BAGGOTT, Mr. SKITTERY (Lillands), Mr. Martin SKITTERY, Mr. and Mrs. J. COVELLS (The Laddin), Mr. and Mrs. J. BROWN (Post Office), Mrs. MORRIS, Miss MORRIS, Mrs. RUCK, Mrs. W. BROWN and Miss PERKS. FLORAL TRIBUTES There were a number of beautiful floral tributes from the following From his loving mother, aunt, uncle and cousins at Aylton; with deep sympathy from his comrades, No. 2 section, F. Company the Herefordshire Regiment (artificial wreath); with deep sympathy from his fellow employees; from Mr. BRADLEY and George; to Charlie from Gladys; in affectionate remembrance from Mr. and Mrs. STURGE; with sympathy from Mrs. RICHARDSON; Mrs. J. RUCK, Mrs. D. RUCK; in kind remembrance from Mr. and Mrs. SKITTERY; with deep sympathy from Mrs. KINGS (Newbridge Cottage); Mrs. DAVIES, Mrs. GREENING, Mr. and Mrs. J. BROWN, Mrs. BOULTER, and Mr. DAVIES. Mrs. Wright received the following message from Lord KITCHENER: "The King commands me to assure you of the true sympathy of his Majesty and the Queen in your sorrow."
